Milkalyser has strengthened its team with the appointment of Ben Brunt as Chief Information Officer (CIO).
Ben will lead the Milkalyser team in beginning the roll-out of our units and analysing their performance. As we start to get data back from farms, he’ll be working with the team and external collaborators to make best use of this information, and begin developing a strategy for bringing together the huge amount of available data to present it to industry decision-makers in forms they can act on.
Having grown up on a family dairy farm on the west coast of Wales, Ben had a passion for farming from an early age. This, coupled with his fascination with technology, led to experiments digitising the farm records, maintenance and milking machine electronics.
Ben went on to study Physics at the University of Oxford, before completing his PhD at the University of Cambridge, where his main topic of research was the analysis of the vast amounts of data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider.
His studies also included working on a novel strategy for the detection of new physics processes; by testing simple symmetries of physics as they are understood, the need for uncertain and costly simulation used by many searches is avoided.
Ben explained: “For decades particle physics has pushed the frontiers of computing in terms of data volume and throughput. The internet of things (IoT) has started to bring these big data possibilities to other industries.
“Making the most of this opportunity will need both experience in handling large data volumes and domain-specific knowledge. I hope my experience in data analysis and my background in farming will help Milkalyser take a lead in agri-data management.”
Ben added: “I like a good problem to get stuck into, and the IoT revolution makes this an exciting time for agri-technology. In this field, Milkalyser stood out. The company has a strong vision and a strong team to bring it about. Our brilliant location on the Exeter Science Park is an added bonus – I don’t think there are many people with as beautiful a commute to work!”
